Biomethane Injections Up Across EU Member States

A recent report by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) highlights a continued rise in biomethane injections across 18 EU Member States. 📈🌱

During the 2024-2025 gas year (October 2024 –  September 2025), a total of 43.2 TWh of renewable gas (composed almost entirely of biomethane) was injected into transmission and distribution grids – 18 EU Member States, representing a 12% increase compared with the previous gas year. ⚡

This growth reflects both:
✅ the start-up of new biomethane plants, and
✅ the gradual ramp-up of existing facilities reaching their higher nominal capacities.

The majority of these injections were concentrated in five countries—France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, and Netherlands—which together accounted for over 90% of the total biomethane volumes injected into the 18 EU member states TSO and DSO networks.  At the same time, countries such as Belgium and the Czech Republic saw their injections double or even quadruple. 🌍

The report highlights the major advantage of leveraging the existing natural gas infrastructure by integrating biomethane and other renewable gases. This approach enables industries and households to decarbonise their energy use while avoiding costly network modifications, or major infrastructure investments. 💡
