Switzerland runs on its own rules — and imports most of its renewable gas

Swiss demand is well above Swiss production, so most of the gas arrives from the EU. Whether its certificate arrives with it is another matter.

Regulation & compliance
Biomethane market, Switzerland

Swiss biomethane demand sits well above Swiss biomethane production, so most of the gas arrives from the EU. Getting it across involves a specific set of instruments that do not map neatly onto the German or Dutch systems.

Since January 2025, Pronovo issues the certificates. Naturemade Star adds a premium label for gas made from waste and residues. Imports come through the AIB hub, currently from nine EU countries — and whether a certificate is recognised depends on the agreements between the two registries, not on the quality of the gas.

For a Swiss buyer, the practical consequence is blunt: the cheapest European offer is often the one that cannot be transferred. The workable price is the one where the certificate arrives.

bGX is based in Zürich and a VUE member. We source across Europe and deliver into the Swiss system with recognition already resolved.
