Biomethane Guarantees of Origin — How They Work
A Guarantee of Origin (GoO) certifies the renewable origin of biomethane injected into the gas grid. The registry system denominates GoOs in MWh units, although transfers and certificates may contain aggregated volumes. The GoO is transferred independently from the physical molecules. Its validity is typically 12 months from the issuance date but sometimes longer depending on the national registry and jurisdiction.
What is a Guarantee of Origin, and what is it actually for?
A Guarantee of Origin (GoO) is an electronic certificate used to demonstrate to final consumers that a specific quantity of energy was produced from renewable sources. For renewable gas, including biomethane, the current EU framework is set out in Article 19 of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II / III), while operational rules are further harmonised through EN 16325.
The GoO documents the renewable origin of the energy in MWh. GoOs operate on a book-and-claim basis, meaning the certificate can be transferred separately from the physical gas. A buyer in one country may purchase and cancel a GoO produced in another country, even though the physical gas itself remains blended within the gas grid.
GoOs are issued, transferred and cancelled through national registries, with cross-border transfers possible where registries are connected through a hub, either ERGaR or AIB.
EN 16325 defines the core principles for GoO issuance, transfer, cancellation and disclosure. Certificates remain valid only for a limited period after the production of the underlying energy and must be cancelled within the applicable regulatory and registry deadlines.

Using a GoO where a PoS is required leaves a buyer exposed at audit. The certificate type must match the regulatory use case.

Three steps connect a MWh injected into the grid to a verified disclosure claim by the end consumer.
Issued at production
For biomethane injected into the gas grid by a producer, the national registry issues corresponding GoOs. The certificate carries the energy unit, production date, plant identifier, feedstock category and other relevant sustainability or technical attributes, depending on the applicable registry rules.
Transferred via ERGaR or AIB
The GoO can be transferred from the producer’s national registry to the buyer’s national registry through the ERGaR (European Renewable Gas Registry) network or AIB (Association of Issuing Bodies). A trader sits between the producer and the buyer to coordinate volume, registry path, and pricing.
Cancelled by the end client
To make a green gas claim — whether for voluntary market purposes, regulatory reporting or certain compliance-related frameworks — the end client cancels the GoO within the applicable registry system against a specific instrument or consumption claim. Cancellation may occur within the applicable framework or registry rules. Once cancelled, the GoO is consumed and removed from circulation: it cannot be reused or double-counted. The cancellation record is the audit-ready evidence backing the disclosure claim.
The mechanics buyers and producers actually need to understand
Book-and-claim — not mass-balance
GoOs are decoupled from the physical gas. The molecules can stay in Denmark while the certificate moves to Switzerland. This makes GoOs flexible and tradable — but also means they cannot prove physical chain of custody. For frameworks that require physical traceability (BEHG, EU ETS, FuelEU Maritime), a Proof of Sustainability under mass-balance logic is required instead.
The validity and cancellation clock
EN 16325, together with national registry rules, governs how long a GoO stays valid. In practice, a GoO remains valid only for a limited period after the underlying energy is produced, and must be transferred and cancelled within the applicable registry deadlines. Miss the cancellation window and the certificate expires unused — with no commercial value. Active portfolio management between producer, trader, and buyer is essential to avoid stranded volumes.
ERGaR and AIB connect national registries
Cross-border GoO transfers run through the network of ERGaR (European Renewable Gas Registry) or AIB (Association of Issuing Bodies), which link national registries including Energinet (Denmark), VertiCer (Netherlands), and others. ERGaR and AIB ensure volume integrity across borders — no double issuance, no double cancellation.
Different functions: GoO vs. PoS
A GoO certifies the renewable origin of the gas, but by itself does not demonstrate RED sustainability compliance, feedstock eligibility or GHG reduction performance. For RED-based frameworks, such as BEHG (soon part of EU ETS II), EU ETS, or FuelEU Maritime, additional sustainability documentation, including a Proof of Sustainability (PoS), is required. GoOs and PoS can therefore apply to the same renewable gas volumes, but they answer different regulatory and commercial questions.
