How EU biomethane cross-border transfer works
Biomethane uses the existing gas grid, tracked by certificates and mass-balance accounting — here’s the three-step logic behind every cross-border trade.
Production
Biomethane is produced from organic feedstocks — agricultural residues, manure, biowaste, dedicated energy crops or sewage sludge — and upgraded to natural gas quality before injection into the local grid. Depending on the applicable market and regulatory framework producers may use recognised sustainability schemes such as ISCC or REDcert to document feedstock origin, GHG emissions savings and chain-of-custody information.
Transfer of Guarantee of Origin (GoO) and Proof of Sustainability (PoS)
Once injected, metering and operational data are then transferred to the country origin registry which subsequently issues the GoO. The GoO may then be transferred between market participants across active registry systems (ERGaR or AIB). Proof of Sustainability (PoS) is issued by the certified producer under the applicable RED voluntary scheme and transferred alongside the transaction documentation. The EU Union Database (UDB), being currently developed, is expected to strengthen traceability for PoS information across the biomethane mass balance supply chain.

The main components of EU biomethane compliance and traceability
Sourcing biomethane requires understanding how certification schemes, compliance documentation, traceability methodologies and registries interact. These elements serve different regulatory and commercial purposes.
Guarantee of Origin (GoO)
GoOs are disclosure documents confirming the renewable origin of gas volumes. GoOs are issued and transferred through biomethane national registry systems that enable cross-border tracking and market claims. This supports voluntary market disclosure, corporate reporting and renewable energy claims, but do not by themselves demonstrate RED sustainability compliance.
Proof of Sustainability (PoS)
PoS are compliance documents demonstrating that biomethane batches meet RED sustainability criteria including eligible feedstocks and GHG savings. PoS documentation operates within a mass-balance chain-of-custody system, where certified volumes are administratively tracked across the supply chain. The UDB will be supporting this system by recording transactions and movements of certified biomethane volumes across Member States, strengthening traceability and transparency.
EU Union Database (UDB)
The Union Database is the EU’s centralised tracking system for liquid and gaseous renewable and recycled carbon fuels under RED III. It records production, transfer, and use of certified biomethane volumes across Member States and enables cross-border traceability at a European level. The UDB is being progressively rolled out — operational for certain use cases, with full deployment ongoing — and will become the reference registry for compliance volumes, particularly for buyers in regulated markets seeking audit-ready documentation that covers the full supply chain from feedstock to final use.
Mass balance & chain of custody
Mass balance is the accounting logic that makes cross-border EU biomethane trade possible: certified volumes injected anywhere in the European gas network can be attributed — via contractual documentation — to consumption at any connected point. The buyer doesn’t receive the specific molecules produced; they receive the certified attributes. Biomethane is a renewable gas produced by upgrading biogas derived from organic waste, agricultural residues, manure, energy crops and other biomass feedstocks to a quality comparable to natural gas. It can be injected into existing gas grids and used for heating, power generation, industrial processes or transport. In biomethane markets, the gas is typically accompanied by environmental attributes and sustainability documentation such as Guarantees of Origin (GoO) and Proofs of Sustainability (PoS).
Biomethane is injected into the national gas grid at the production site, then tracked through mass-balance accounting as volumes move across the pan-European network. GoOs are the standard instrument for voluntary and compliance markets. A Proof of Sustainability (PoS) certifies that the biomethane meets RED feedstock eligibility and GHG reduction thresholds, linked to mass-balance traceability throughout the supply chain. PoS issued under recognised voluntary schemes such as ISCC or REDcert is required for BEHG, EU ETS, and FuelEU Maritime compliance.
