European biomethane production sharply on the rise

According to the latest EBA/GIE Biomethane Map, close to 300 new biomethane units started to operate in the last 18 months, thus bringing the number of biomethane plants in Europe to 1023 units, out of which 87% are estimated to be connected to the gas grid.

Denmark, Italy and more particularly France are continuing to see sharp growth in new biomethane plants. In France only, 123 new biomethane units started to operate during the first 10 months of 2021.

Preliminary figures from the European Biogas Association (EBA) show that European joint biogas and biomethane productions were slightly above 200TWh in 2021 versus 191TWh in 2020. This number is expected to double by 2030.

According to the EBA, European biomethane production could reach 1000 TWh/year by 2050 (30-40% of EU gas consumption).
