Switzerland to Launch New GoO-System for Biomethane

On November 20, the Swiss Federal Council approved the ordinances on the new system of guarantees of origin (GoOs) which expand the scope of Pronovo beyond electricity, to include renewable fuels – gaseous and liquids – such as biomethane. With the new system which will replace the current VSG/ASIG clearing system, Switzerland aims to align with European standards and enhance transparency in the energy sector.

Pronovo, who uses the @Grexel system, will have connectivity with the European Renewable Gas Registry (ERGaR) as well as with the system of the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB).

January 1st 2025 is the start of the legal obligation to record local production and imports of biomethane in Pronovo.

The following rules will apply in Pronovo for GoOs of biomethane issued from 01.01.2025 :

✔️Imported biomethane GoOs valid for 18 months

✔️Domestic biomethane GoOs valid for 60 months

Furthermore, a new “positive list” of certification systems will be established to verify the ecological requirements for renewable gases imported via certificates. This list is still expected to be published by the end of this year.
