Europe’s biomethane capacity sees steady growth

By the end of Q1 2025, Europe’s total installed biomethane production capacity had nearly reached 70 TWh per year, according to the latest figures. from the European Biogas Association (EBA). The number of operational biomethane plants increased from 1’548 in 2024 to 1’678, with 165 new facilities coming online over the past year.

France has emerged as Europe’s leading biomethane producer, boasting an installed capacity of more than 14TWh/year from 760 units, overtaking both Germany (~13 TWh/year) and the UK (~7.5 TWh/year), where growth has stalled due to regulatory challenges. Italy has joined the ranks of the top three European producers- with close to 8 TWh/year of installed capacity . Denmark remains a close follower with approximately 7 TWh/y of production capacity, while the Netherlands (~3 TWh per year) and Sweden (~1.5 TWh per year) continue to play significant roles. However, progress in these three countries has slowed amid ongoing policy uncertainty.

Although investor appetite remains high—with €28 billion already committed —market growth is showing signs of deceleration. To sustain and accelerate progress, European member states need to establish clear targets and roadmaps, while the EU must provide long-term policy stability and simplify regulatory procedures for operators.
