Brighter perspective for the biomethane sector

The biomethane industry is recovering with improving demand and sales prices, driven by climate protection legislation and expected rising demand from the fuel sector given the national GHG reduction target, says the German Energy Agency (Dena) in its annual biomethane industry barometer.

In 2020, total biomethane sales volumes were at a record high of around 10.3 TWh (Vs 9.7 TWh in 2019) mostly due to a sharper demand from the fuel sector –1 TWh (Vs 733GWh in 2019)  – as well as continuous growth in demand in the heating sector. The requirement of the EU RED II and the Federal Immission Control Act’s new rules on the GHG quota (BImSchG) have already boosted the use of biomethane in the transport sector, while the introduction of the BEHG since Jan-21 is expected to drive demand further. The report also states that most CNG filling stations in Germany have now shifted to biomethane

Additionally, the industry barometer also mentions that despite fragmented regulations/markets, biomethane demand is picking up in foreign markets – import from Switzerland were sharply up.
